I knew, in theory, that the Pacific Ocean was different than the Atlantic. From surfing movies like Endless Summer and Chasing Mavericks, I knew it was somehow bigger, colder, and a deeper shade of aqua blue on the West Coast. But until I saw the enormous crashing waves firsthand, and heard the deep hollow-earth thundering boom as they pummeled the cliffs, I had no idea how terrifyingly beautiful and threateningly powerful this ocean really was. I was instantly drawn to it. And, obviously, took wayyy too many photos.]]>

We spent the first night on the bank of the Great Letaba River, falling asleep to the sounds of elephants playing and splashing the water in the dark next to us, and half-waking to a family of curious giraffes wandering through early in the morning. Then on to some very difficult off-road driving to Mayuka Reserve, and a few games of spikeball at sunset under the Masunda Cliffs, to whoops and cheers of baboons across the water (and possibly a leopard in the woods nearby).]]>
